Curriculum for Grades 3-9


iQ Academy Texas provides a core 3-9** grade curriculum based on Texas state-approved academic standards. In addition, a variety of elective courses are available in world language, physical education, art, and music.

Grade 3-8 students must take all core courses, in addition to their choice of electives, for a total of six (6) courses per year.

Grade 9 students must take all core courses, in addition to their choice of a foreign language, art appreciation and music appreciation, for a total of seven (7) courses per year.

English Language Arts and Reading

Our Grade 3 English Language Arts and Reading course develops students’ lifetime reading fluency and writing proficiency through a variety of techniques and resources. Students develop the skills required for reading quickly and accurately with independent reading and self-guided comprehension. Spelling, grammar, and cursive handwriting mastery are also highlighted. Students develop their abilities to read and write with activities that include age- and developmentally appropriate Readers’ Workshops, Writers’ Workshops, and Word Studies. This course also features lots of printable booklets (“Leveled Readers”), and it also offers fun online activities and other integrated, interactive games.

Enrichment

This Third Grade “Enrichment” course provides units and activities designed to encourage students’ interest and proficiency in Music and Art. Students are guided through fun, age appropriate units where they create their own instruments, view famous works of art (and make many of their own), and many other engaging “hands-on” projects. Art and Music fundamentals are blended with an introduction to the background of these two subjects. The result is beautiful, melodic, colorful fun.

Math

Our Grade 3 Math students develop a proficient “number sense” and an understanding of mathematical operations, which serves as the foundation for lifelong math appreciation. In addition to various other skills, students master place-value concepts, mathematical language and symbols,study fractions and mixed numbers, to understand monetary denominations and make change up to $10, and begin to master multiplication and division facts. This course features many printable lessons and worksheets, as well as fun “hands-on” counting and problem-solving activities to be done at home.

Physical Education

In Physical Education, students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to a physically-active lifestyle. The student exhibits a physically-active lifestyle and understands the relationship between physical activity and health throughout the lifespan. Students also learn age specific skills and the health benefits of physical activity. Students begin to learn game strategies, rules, and etiquette. Students must complete 135 minutes per week of structured physical fitness.

Our Grade 3 Science units foster the natural interest children have in their environments and the scientific phenomena that we see every day. Students will explore Science through virtual experiences and resources such as Science A - Z. This course fosters a variety of learning experiences such as: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, Scientific Inquiry, Scientific Ways of Knowing, and Science & Technology.

The Grade 3 Social Studies units help children gain an understanding of their neighborhoods, local governments, state, country, and world. In this course, students will focus on communities past and present, near and far.

Social Studies

In Grade 4, students examine the history of Texas from the early beginnings to the present within the context of influences of the Western Hemisphere. Historical content focuses on Texas history including the Texas revolution, establishment of the Republic of Texas, and subsequent annexation to the United States. Students discuss important issues, events, and individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. Students conduct a thorough study of regions in Texas and the Western Hemisphere that result from human activity and from physical features. A focus on the location, distribution, and patterns of economic activities and of settlement in Texas further enhances the concept of regions.

Social Studies

Grade 5 Social Studies features an in-depth examination of the United States history and geography. Students learn all about our great nation, as well as map and graphing skills in geography, time lines, detecting bias and generalizations, how to do research, and many other skills. In addition to the colorful and engaging online textbook, this course also features educational videos, cartoons, worksheets, handouts, and many other creative and exciting educational resources.

English Language Arts

The 6th Grade Language Arts Curriculum integrates literature, vocabulary, writing and grammar together in a 21st Century setting. The students will be given the opportunity to create blogs (online journals) where they can log and reflect upon their independent reading. They will be asked to engage in discussion forums where they will post their writing for the teacher and other students enrolled in the course to view and respond. They will be presented with the possibility of creating a multimedia report rather than a traditional research paper. This course will empower life-long learners- who are actively engaged in their own learning and take ownership of their scholastic endeavors.

Math

Students will learn 6th grade math topics drawing from a variety of sources, including hands on activities, interactive lessons, and practical math applications. Within a well-balanced mathematics curriculum, the primary focal points at Grade 6 are using ratios to describe direct proportional relationships involving number, geometry, measurement, probability, and adding and subtracting decimals and fractions.

Physical Education

The sixth grade physical education course introduces students to health related fitness components, dance, team sports, healthy choices, and lifetime activities. Through these units students learn the essential principles of a healthy, active lifestyle. These lessons will give the student exposure to many of the activities that can be incorporated into their daily lives today and in the future. Students learn lifelong skills such as rock climbing, orienteering, and ping-pong along with stress management concepts through Yoga and Pilates. Students develop a sense of self-esteem and accomplishment through completion of fitness tests, attaining personal goals set, and learning to care for their body. Students must also complete 120 minutes per week of structured physical fitness.

Science

The 6th grade science course will introduce students to a variety of science topics, skills and ideas. Students will have the opportunity to explore several different scientific fields through research, experimentation, and interactive activities. Throughout the course, students will use the scientific method and understand that the scientific method applies to all scientific disciplines and endeavors.

Social Studies

Students in grade 6 expand their understanding of History, Civics and Government, Geography, Economics, and Individuals, Society, and Culture by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Geography is of special significance in the development of the human story. Students will have the opportunity to explore civilizations by learning about the history, culture, citizenship, economy, religions, and government of the different cultures present at that time. In so doing, the students will learn and utilize math, science, technology, and critical thinking skills in daily learning. Students analyze the interactions among the various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and the link between or World today and these ancient worlds.

English Language Arts

Through this exciting course students will engage in an interactive, hands-on array of reading and writing activities designed to enhance and integrate literacy across all content areas – science, social studies, math, art, and more. Students will develop effective communication skills through listening, speaking, and writing via activities designed to strengthen vocabulary, improve grammar, and reinforce reading comprehension through strategy instruction. Students will gain a greater appreciation for literature while recognizing the application of new life-skills through reading and writing activities designed to teach and incorporate fun at the same time. Colorful and interactive activities will motivate and facilitate better reading and writing skills to keep students constantly engaged. Teacher-to students, student-to-self, and peer-to-peer assessments will serve as constant benchmarks that facilitate the higher-order, problem solving and collaborative skills required to meet academic and career expectations for years to come.

Students will learn 7th grade math topics drawing from a variety of sources, including hands on activities, interactive lessons, and practical math applications. Within a well-balanced mathematics curriculum, the primary focal points at Grade 7 are using direct proportional relationships in number, geometry, measurement, and probability; applying addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals, fractions, and integers; and using statistical measures to describe data.

Physical Education

Scientific evidence has shown that regular physical activity is essential to our health and wellness. The American Heart Association has indicated that the primary cause for the number one killer in the United States, heart disease, can be treated with daily participation in physical activity. This course teaches students to make informed decisions to assist them both now and in the future. Students in eighth grade physical education will be exposed to a variety of lifetime physical activities such as canoeing, cycling, and kickboxing. Students must also complete 120 minutes each week of structured physical fitness.

Science

This course will provide students with enlightenment and instruction on the nature of science, using a discovery process to teach the scientific method, and the use of metric measurements in scientific investigations. It covers the study of the Universe, stars, constellations, and objects in the Solar System. Movement and pathways of the Earth and Moon are investigated, with natural paths uncovered as students discover just how large the universe really is. Next, students will discover how Earth materials are formed and what they can teach us about Mother Earth’s past as they investigate the natural processes that shape its ecosystem, the landscape and the creation of different environments on Earth. The course then covers basic concepts of force, motion, and equilibrium. Concepts of human biology are also uncovered, with emphasis on body systems and those amazing functions that contribute to our wellness. Agricultural science and its impact on biotechnology is introduced, along with its affect on human interaction with the earth. Finally, the basics of environmental science are covered, and through the use of stunning photography and lively animation, students will interact with endangered species, learn about natural resource use, environmental health, pollution, and biodiversity.

Texas History

Texas History students study the history of Texas from early times to the present. Students examine the full scope of Texas history, including the cultures of Native Americans living in Texas prior to European exploration and the eras of mission-building, colonization, revolution, republic, and statehood. Students will be able to explain the influence of the U.S. Constitution on the Texas Constitution, and examine the rights and responsibilities of Texas citizens. Students will use primary and secondary sources to examine the rich and diverse cultural background of Texas.

English Language Arts

Students will learn to read critically with full comprehension across genres and be able to communicate through effective writing. As students develop critical reading and writing skills, they will make important life connections through the variety of material they study. Additionally, students will practice vocabulary, grammar, and listening skills with each weekly lesson. All material will be connected to a universal theme for each unit: Tolerance, Determination, Social Justice, Times of War, Search for Self, and Cultural Traditions. As students encounter a variety of text structures and multi-media, the will be able to see how these different things connect to one large idea and see how these large ideas connect across other content areas being studied. Each student will be required to engage in activities and assessments that require critical thinking skills and that meet rigorous academic expectations. As students complete this course, hopefully they will see the relevance that this course has in their daily life and future academic and career goals.

Students will learn 8th grade math topics drawing from a variety of sources, including hands on activities, interactive lessons, and practical math applications. Within a well-balanced mathematics curriculum, the primary focal points at Grade 8 are using basic principles of algebra to analyze and represent both proportional and non-proportional linear relationships and using probability to describe data and make predictions.

Science

This course provides a rigorous and comprehensive foundation for the 8th grade student about to enter high school science. It covers the relevant topics in all the major disciplines, building on prior knowledge and expanding on subjects introduced earlier in middle school. Students begin with a review of the scientific process and get more into depth with the idea of critical analysis of theories and experimental research. They will move on to discuss principles of physical science and energy In the life science portion of the course, students will cover structure and function of organisms, genetics, and evolution, and tenets of ecology. This will flow into the environmental science topics including earth’s cycles and environmental problems. A brief discussion of the solar system will also be covered. Students will learn about the assigned topics through interactive activities, experimentation, discussion, and engaging text and animations. Graded assignments will be stimulating and thought-provoking, hopefully paving the way for future interest in the scientific disciplines: environmental health, pollution, and biodiversity.

Social Studies

Eighth grade students will build on their concepts of geography, civics, and political societies beginning with the world as it was in the 1500’s followed by the natural unfolding of events from the explorations, the establishment of the colonies, the colonial era leading up to the causes of and including the French and Indian War and The Revolutionary War. The development of American government from a confederation to a constitutional one, the launching of the Republic, through the War of 1812, the growth and development of the nation through the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark exploration on through Manifest Destiny and the Mexican War will follow. Students will explore the changes in the nation from immigration and abolition issues to the Civil War and Reconstruction, westward expansion, to the development of the U.S. as a world power and into World War One. They will explore the 1920’s, the Great Depression and World War Two.

Biology

This course is an introduction to general biology and to the processes of scientific inquiry and thinking. It will include the fundamental principles of living organisms including physical and chemical properties of life, cellular organization and function, the transfer of energy through metabolic systems, cellular reproduction, the classification of living things, the six kingdoms of life will be examined. The main focus is to present biological information in an understandable and straight forward way that will capture the students’ interest dealing with up to date principles and concepts.

English I

This introductory English course combines the study of literary genre with a focus on composition skills. Students will learn effective communication skills by focusing on the 6 + 1 Traits of writing developed by the Northwest Regional Education Laboratories. Oral communication and research skills are included. Students select from a choice of novels in the first semester, and in the second semester they will read The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, by Jerome and Robert E. Lee; ISBN #055327838X

Geometry

The Geometry course is a comprehensive look at the study of geometric concepts including the basic elements of geometry, proofs, parallel and perpendicular lines, the coordinate plane, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles, trigonometry, congruence and similarity, surface area, volume and transformations. Counselor approval required.

Physical Education

This course focuses on the fundamental components and principles of fitness. The course examines safety guidelines, proper technique, and exercise principles such as the FITT. Students will assess their current level of fitness in relation to the five components of physical fitness: flexibility, cardiovascular health, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and body composition. Students will also learn strategies to help them begin, design, and maintain an exercise program to keep them fit for life.

World Geography

This Geography course will examine a broad range of geographical perspectives covering all of the major regions of the world. Each region will be reviewed in a similar structure in order for students to more clearly see the similarities and differences between each region. Specifically, the course will explore where each region is located along with its physical characteristics, including absolute and relative location, climate, and significant geographical features. The exploration will then continue on to look at each region from a cultural, economic, and political perspective, closely examining the human impact on each region from these perspectives as well as how human activities impact the environments of the region.

Journey through time and place while examining some of the greatest masterpieces created. In this course, students will explore world regions and study the unique artifacts and works of architecture that define ancient civilizations. From Mesopotamia, the world’s first civilization, to the Roman streets of Pompeii, participants will learn the fundamental concepts of art, how to look at and evaluate art, and the intended function of natural history museums through hands-on-activities, discussions, written assignments, and objective assessments.

This one-semester course will introduce learners to the various forms of the visual arts, such as painting, sculpture, film, and more. Students will learn how to look at a work of art, identify and compare key characteristics in artworks, and understand the role art has played throughout history. Through hands-on activities, virtual museum tours, discussion, and research, learners will develop an overall appreciation for the art they encounter in their daily lives.

In this course, students will learn about various careers that are available today. The students will complete self-evaluations to determine which careers are of most interest to them. In this introductory course, students learn how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2000 to create, analyze, edit, share and publish information for a variety of audiences and purposes. Through step-by-step tutorials and a project-based approach to learning, student become familiar with the key concepts and basic skills of today’s information technology sector.

Digital Photography

In the digital photography and graphic design lessons, students begin by learning general photographic concepts. Then composition skills are added to photographs and image-editing techniques are practiced. Students learn how to use layers, crop images, color and lighting concepts, hue and saturation, and exposures and special effects. Graphic design, artistic elements, and software skills are taught while producing graphic images. The concept of design as a manner of visual communication is carried throughout. Students build a portfolio of work and explore the fields of photography, graphic arts, advertising and illustration.

French I*

French I has been carefully designed to meet the standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These standards call for a method of teaching that focuses on successful communication through speaking, writing, reading, and listening, as well as a thorough grounding in aspects of culture. Each unit embodies all of these standards in accordance with the theories described in this document. Unit activities blend different forms of communication and culture to ensure that the student meets all standards. Course strategies include warm-up activities, vocabulary study, reading, threaded discussions, multi-media presentations, self-checks, practice activities and games, oral and written assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams. Learning activities in each unit are focused upon a specific theme. This course is available for 8th grade students only and must be approved by the counselor. It does count as one year of world language for high school credit.

Students will learn health information and practices, and gain experience in implementing these newfound skills. Latin I*

Latin I is an introduction to the basics of Latin grammar. It is intended to help you develop the skills necessary to translate basic sentences from Latin to English and English to Latin, and for reading simple connected passages of Latin prose and poetry. In the first semester, we cover the first 10 chapters of Wheelock’s Latin grammar. In the process, you will learn how verb conjugations and noun declensions work in a highly inflected language, how to analyze the structure of Latin sentences and translate English sentences into well-formed Latin equivalents, and you will begin to read connected excerpts from ancient authors. In the second semester, we cover chapters 11 through 20 of Wheelock’s Latin grammar. In the process, you will learn how verb conjugations and noun declensions work in a highly inflected language, how to analyze the structure of Latin sentences and translate English sentences into well-formed Latin equivalents, and you will begin to read connected excerpts from ancient authors. The content studied will directly apply to other areas of study providing students with an additional enrichment experience they’ll be able to take with them for a lifetime. Quizzes, discussion boards, projects, and performance activities will be assessed weekly to gauge content understanding. After completion of this course, students will be able to describe and analyze musical sound, demonstrate musical artistry, perform a varied repertoire of music, read and write music notation, create and arrange music within specified guidelines and related music to history, society, and culture.

Music

Through this online Music Appreciation course students will be exposed to many diverse activities and will learn a wide variety of musical concepts they will be able to use in their everyday lives for the rest of their lives. Students will learn foundational skills such as performing, listening, analyzing, and responding to music. Students will develop a sense of self-esteem by accomplishing activities that require higher critical thinking skills especially developed for their grade level. Integrated assignments incorporate other content areas of study such as: science, social studies, and math. The content studied will directly apply to other areas of study providing students with an additional enrichment experience they’ll be able to take with them for a lifetime. Music Appreciation

This one semester course introduces students to the elements, instrumentation, and historical periods of music. Students will learn significance of surroundings and time periods and how they both influenced the music of the day. Students will listen to and evaluate several types of music, and will be assessed through projects, presentations, and exams on the knowledge and understanding of music.

Spanish 1A*

Spanish 1A has been carefully designed to meet the standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These standards call for a method of teaching that focuses on successful communication through speaking, writing, reading, and listening, as well as a thorough grounding in aspects of culture. Each unit embodies all of these standards in accordance with the theories described in this document. Unit activities blend different forms of communication and culture to ensure that the student meets all standards. Course strategies include warm-up activities, vocabulary study, reading, threaded discussions, multi-media presentations, self-checks, practice activities and games, oral and written assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams. Learning activities in each unit are focused upon a specific theme. This course is available for 7th and 8th grade students. It does not count as high school credit. Students may earn high school credit by passing the CLEP test for Spanish 1 upon completion of Spanish 1A and Spanish 1B.

World Language Survey

In this World Languages course students will be introduced to 6 different languages within 18 weeks. The languages in this course include Spanish, French, German, Latin, Chinese and Japanese. Each language will be taught in a period of 3 weeks. This multilingual course is designed to give students an opportunity to gain understanding of a language that they might want to further study in the future. Each language is equally represented, thus allowing the student to conceptualize and practice the language one at a time. The course takes a multi-perspective approach for teaching the culture of the people that speak the language along with fundamental communication skills in the target language. Activities that engage students and make language learning exciting and fun will be incorporated to build acquisition. The language will be taught using the communicative method which combines listening, speaking, reading and writing in the target language with the use of multimedia resources.
